Shimomura’s Masterpiece TheateRuler

finished

Venue:art space co-jin

SHIMOMURA Masahiro mainly uses oil-based pens, Coupy pencils, and pencils to create striking drawings that evoke an act out of a story. The motifs used in his paintings are diverse: townscapes with houses and bridges, birds, dogs, and other creatures, nature such as trees with intense sunlight filtering through them are used symbolically, as are a series of drawings resembling a period drama set and dot-picture-like geometric patterns.
Of particular note is the use of “rulers,” used without fail in these drawings. The ruler plays an important role in Shimomura’s drawings, used not only for straight outlines, but also for the process itself. The shavings of Coupy pencils and graphite pencil powder are also rubbed off on the rulers, giving them an aged patina. This exhibition featured paintings as well as videos of the production process.

About three sheets of A3 copy paper are drawn during the afternoon production time. Each motif is embodied by his memory and imagination, without the aid of sketches, photographs, or other materials. The world in one drawting evokes through us a story that lies between another work. In some cases, the horizon and ridges are connected to other drawings as if they were composed of multiple drawings, and the repeated rhythm creates an ideal and harmonious arrangement.
The 20cm “ruler,” used not only for straight outlines but also for the drawing process, plays an important role in Shimomura's drawings. The blank spaces are colored by repeatedly drawing lines along the ruler, shifting them slightly. The ruler is used for simple signs. Coupy pencils and pencil powder shavings are rubbed off on the rulers, giving them an aged look that is an important element of the work.
In addition to the unique drawing process, he also focuses on a number of daily routines. Standard long sleeves and work clothes. The beloved 100 poems. The order in which he puts away his karuta cards in their cases. The rules of placement imposed on the joker of a playing card. The year of creation must be written one year ahead of the year. For example, most of the works listed as “2023” were painted in the year 2022. However, he says, “Sometimes they catch up. After the drawing is finished, a “time of loving” begins, in which the artist looks at the completed work with tender eyes, as if soaking in the afterglow after a masterpiece has been created.
