For YAMAGUCHI Keitaro, the lens is not a window through which to view the outside world, but rather just the right projection on which to place his left hand when pressing the shutter. IGUCHI Naoto has been performing the shocking act of copying his own face on a copy machine set to two colors for over 20 years. The photographs with memories change like decayed old photographs because SUGIURA Atsushi touches them with deep affection. NAKATA Keiyo, who has been holding a camera in his hand since childhood to capture everyday life, records his own fashion on a daily basis. YONEDA Yuji’s photographs reflect his point of view in his daily life, and the series of processes that begin with the shooting of the photographs are an important means of communication with others.
This exhibition, titled “art space co-jin + picture = “Co-pic”” introduces the unique and diverse worlds created through the activities of the above five photographers. The exhibition will present a view that cannot be fully grasped within the framework of “expression” or “artwork.
Finally, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to all the artists, their relatives, institutions, and related parties for their cooperation in this exhibition.

Profile

IGUCHI Naoto

Born in 1971, Lives in Aichi Pref.
Affiliation : Social Welfare Corporation Safurankai Safuran Seikatsu-en
Using a copy machine at his favorite convenience store or at a facility where he goes, three times a day he records his face, and the things that catch his attention at the time, such as campaign stickers on empty cans. This activity, which began as a pastime with the facility staff, has continued for about 20 years through repeated trial and error, and has now become a well-known daily spectacle in the community. Recently, IGUCHI's life work has expanded to include not only the field of art, but also interaction with various industries. In this exhibition, he exhibited a work copied twice in two colors, an “armband-type” collage created in collaboration with his mother and given as a gift to a certain someone, and a series called “wind!” was released.

SUGIURA Atsushi

Born in 1970, Lives in Saitama Pref.
Affiliation : Social Welfare Corporation Minuma Fukushi Kai, Kobo Shu
SUGIURA continues to touch his favorite photographs one by one as if to reaffirm his memories of them. Therefore, their material gradually wears off and fades. After dinner or before breakfast, when he can relax, he selects his favorite photos from the drawers in his room or the shelf by his bed, and spends time touching them. Through the repetition of this act, which is a very important time for him, the photographs of his private memories are weathered and images become abstract. At the same time, his actions are fixed in the photographs and transformed into something that can be shared with others as a single expression. In addition, the personal relationship between SUGIURA and the photographs is deeply significant because of the activities of the staff members who respected and continued to watch over “what he cherished”.

NAKATA Keiyo

Born in 2001
Lives in Tokushima Pref.
He started photography when he was six years old, when the head teacher at the preschool taught him how to take pictures with a disposable camera. He began using his mother's digital camera and has been accumulating photographs of various landscapes cemented in the daily lives of his loved ones. NAKATA's photographs are characterized by the natural flow of the stories that reside in the expressions of people, land, buildings, and landscapes that have been cut out of time. He would enter between buildings and sneak under the edges, and call the angles from there “the world of scimitars.” He has been modeling for his mother's business since he was a child and still photographs the day's fashions every morning before going to work. From his own collection of works, one can read the rich stories of parents and children that have been cultivated daily through the medium of photography.

YAMAGUCHI Keitaro

Born in 2000
Lives in Kyoto City
Affiliation : General Incorporated Association Various Connections Tsunagari walfare Association
He started taking photos with a digital camera along with doing drawings in 2019 at a facility he attends. YAMAGUCHI's photographic style is to hold the lens over his left hand. The extended lens is a good prominence to put his hand on. As he walks around, he releases the shutter while looking at the scenery, which includes YAMAGUCHI’s fingers, reflected on the LCD monitor. The photograph he took called “TEGAKARI” does not capture any object, but is a trace of the enjoyment of the act, including the sound and feel of the operation. The photo has a pale, soft reddish tint because the sun's rays have filtered through his hand, while the dark gray screen is due to his hand blocking the light. The color patterns created by his fingertips can be seen as a kind of self-portrait, informing us of YAMAGUCHI's certain presence in the here and now.
