Logotypes, symbol marks, TV program title logos, and product catchphrases. They are designed to attract people, and we take it for granted that we are exposed to them in our daily lives.
They catch us unobtrusively and quietly take root in our memories.
For example, just by looking at a logo, we associate it with a company’s name or catchphrase. When we see the title logo of a nostalgic TV program, images of that time naturally come to our mind.
TOMITA Akio and M.O. have not only been captured by them, but have continued to use their rooted memories as motifs and output them in their own unique ways.
TOMITA’s work is based on his memory of a logo he saw on TV when he was a child, and he continues to make collages of thick paper, coated with transparent tape in a circular pattern. The resulting works, both old and new, are stored in large quantities.
M.O., on the other hand, uses clay to sculpt catchphrases and other phrases that are on his mind at the time on his work desk, but he immediately returns the finished work to a lump of clay. Therefore, none of M.O.’s work has left any form, only a record of it taken by the facility’s staff.
We believe that the rich activities of each of these people are also catchy things that attract us. We have named the exhibition Catchy Catch, with a thought for the people who will catch it.
