T/CU/CUT
Venue:art space co-jin
The exhibition “T/CU/CUT” introduces three artists who create works related to the act of “cutting.”
Before the scissors make their cut, a single sheet of paper holds infinite possibilities quietly waiting to be unleashed. The moment the blades touch it, the space that was once just paper is infused with the breath of new “shapes” and “stories.”
“Cutting” is not merely the act of separating things; it is the most fundamental and exhilarating act of weaving a new world from them and letting one’s heart swell with anticipation for unknown beauty. Precisely because it cannot be undone, it radiates the brilliance of existence imbued with resolve.
OTSUKI Shuhei breathes life not only into the “shapes” he cuts out, but also into the “scraps” that would normally be discarded. By blurring the line between the “main subject” and the “afterthought,” his work helps us recognize the important things we usually overlook.
The tens of thousands of silhouettes that KOTERA Natsuki creates spontaneously, without any preliminary sketches, surprise viewers the moment they are unfolded and offer endless enjoyment as they take on diverse forms through the viewer’s imagination.
And the imaginary creatures created by SOGI Kazuaki are not objective representations of their subjects, but are sharply materialized as microcosms dwelling within the artist’s subjective mind.
Where the blades and visions of these three distinct artists intersect, this exhibition space becomes not merely a place where artworks are displayed, but a dynamic stage that pleasantly challenges our familiar perceptions and gives rise to new narratives.
We hope that when you step outside, your daily life will look just a little bit different.

Profile
OTSUKI Shuhei
OTSUKI cuts out familiar motifs—such as candy and fallen leaves—from colored sticker paper, pastes them onto paper, and then layers them with colors selected from ten shades of oil pastels. The artwork is completed through a series of meticulous, painstaking, and unique processes, such as writing the “order of application” in tiny letters on the stickers. Often, he applies the exact same process not only to the “positive” shapes but also to the “negative” spaces—the scraps that would normally be discarded—creating a world where these elements share an inseparable relationship.
KOTERA Natsuki
KOTERA's creative practice is driven by two contrasting series of works. One is the “Paper-Cutting Series,” in which she folds a single sheet of white paper in half and immediately cuts into it with scissors—directly cutting into the paper without sketches, resulting in a collection of tens of thousands of pieces. The mysterious, symmetrical images that emerge the moment the paper is unfolded feature complex combinations of concrete motifs, such as toy poodles and flowers. The other is the “Character Painting Series,” which lovingly depicts animals like rabbits and lions through delicate, fine lines. It is as if the artist’s affection for these characters—unchanged since childhood—has taken tangible form.
SOGI Kazuaki
SOGI is an artist whose passion for paper cutting began in the fifth grade, marking the start of a dedication spanning over 30 years. Driven by a deep love for insects, he regularly ventures into the woods to gently catch and observe them. His works feature imaginary creatures such as the “XX-saurus,” which are hybrids of insects and dinosaurs. The spiky forms he creates from a single sheet of paper using only scissors represent a microcosm of his favorite things, where seemingly contradictory elements—“vibrancy and gentleness”—come to life as beautiful silhouettes.
