2024 The Symbiosis Art Festival “What are you doing now?”

finished

Venue:Kyoto City Museum of Art Annex

The 2024 Symbiosis Art Festival introduced nine artists from Kyoto and beyond.
The title of the exhibition was “What are you doing now? to reflect our desire to imagine the “now” of someone who is not here.
To provide an opportunity to imagine the “now” of each artist, the exhibition included a video introducing their production activities, interviews with supporters, sketches of their daily lives, and other materials, giving us a glimpse not only of their works but also of their personalities and daily lives. The main sign at the entrance of the venue was made of a large movable clock and a white board, which visitors could freely draw on.

Profile

OE Masahiko

Born in 1965, Lives in Osaka Pref.
Affiliation : Atelier Hiko
Due to a heart condition he was born with, OE often had to stay still. Painting had been a part of his life since he was a child. After graduating from a support school, he spent many days at home, and when he was 26 years old, he and his mother began attending a painting class at the Mizunokiryo art school in Kameoka City. Later, his mother wanted him to paint his favorite pictures to the fullest and to have friends in similar circumstances, so when OE was 29 years old, she opened Atelier Hiko in the townhouse in front of their house. Today, at the age of 59, OE continues to paint every day in his atelier and at home.

OYAGI Tsuneyuki

Born in 1976, Lives in Kyoto Pref.
Affiliation : Social Welfare Corporation SHUKO-GAKUEN ASUKAI Work Center
When OYAGI asked his mother to draw “Kin-san of Toyama”, she suggested that he try drawing it himself. Since discovering the joy of drawing by himself, he has continued to create pictures at home on a daily basis, and has created more than 1,000 works. Using oil pastels, he draws neatly arranged groceries, scenes from old TV shows, and abstract works composed only of colored surfaces, combining horizontal and vertical lines.

KIMURA Koichi

Born in 1976, Lives in Kyoto Pref.
Affiliation : Social Welfare Corporation SHUKO-GAKUEN
KIMURA creates original “yokai” such as kappas and monkeys with humorous expressions, or creatures with freely assembled body parts such as arms, legs, eyes, and noses. He first became interested in yokai when he was in elementary school, influenced by MIZUKI Shigeru, and he began by copying them and then gradually began to draw his own original works. At the facility he attends on weekdays, he makes three-dimensional ceramic objects, and at home, he draws on B5 size paper on a daily basis.

SHIMIZU Takahisa

Born in 1985, Lives in Nagano Pref.
Affiliation : Social Welfare Corporation KARIGANE FUKUSHIKAI KAZE NO KOBO
SHIMIZU puts hand-painted price tag stickers on plastic bottles and boxes of snacks that he purchases at convenience stores. In the past, SHIMIZU used to sort and dispose of these items by himself, but one day, seven years ago, a staff member noticed this practice and began to secretly store them. Now, the stickers are no longer thrown away, but are stored at SHIMIZU's home.

TOMIZUKA Yoshimitsu

Born in 1958, Lives in Hyogo Pref.
Affiliation : Social Welfare Corporation Ichiyou-kai,Atelier Suzukake & Suzukake Art Club
TOMIZUKA draws characters with a small brush full of ink. The characters are unreadable. In no time at all, the story is finished, as he tells the imaginary world in his head in a halting manner. TOMIZUKA used to weave stories faithful to his own memories, but now, although the names of the organizations and people who appear in his stories are based on his own memories, the stories are mostly fictional. His fresh and funny stories surprise and delight those around him.

NAGASHIMA Tou

Born in 1998, Lives in Kyoto Pref.
NAGASHIMA's picture diary began on November 18, 2002, when he was three years old and in kindergarten. At first, he could neither write nor draw, but he learned to draw on his own as he was forced to color in rough sketches drawn by his mother, and to hold a pencil in his hand to write letters. He has been creating his picture diary for more than 21 years, expressing his own unique perspective on familiar events and coloring them with oil pastels, which he publishes daily on his blog.

HIGASHIMOTO Noriko

Born in 1983, Lives in Osaka Pref.
Affiliation : Normalization social welfare corporation, Nishiawaji kibou-no-ie
The art club at the Nishi-Awaji House of Hope, which she attends, holds production activities three times a month. She used to paint pictures on canvas or paper, but when the support staff happened to be out of those materials, they handed her some PETIT-PUCHI (bubble wrap), and she started painting dotted pictures by painting the protrusions of the PETIT-PUCHI. The colorfully painted rolls of PETIT-PUCHI stretched as long as 25 meters, and while the first one took about seven years to complete, the second one took about three years to paint 40 meters.

HONMA Mai

Born in 1984, Lives in Mie Pref.
Affiliation : Non-Profit Organization KIBOU-NO-SONO
Twenty-one years ago, she began attending the Garden of Hope, and this was the beginning of her exposure to oil painting. Due to motor dysfunction caused by brain damage, HONMA cannot control her body well. However, once she picks up a paintbrush, free lines spread across the canvas and the color surfaces come alive. Holding the paintbrush tightly, she continues to paint her recent motif of “birds” in vivid colors, keeping each day fresh and new.

MORITA Hiroyasu

Born in 1963, Lives in Nagano Pref.
Affiliation : Social Welfare Corporation Karashitanenokai Midori no Makiba Gakuen
In MORITA’s room in the welfare facility where his lives, he tears his clothes at night and appears in them the next morning. In 2017, this act was recognized as his form of expression when it was selected for the Zawameki Art Exhibition, a public exhibition for people with disabilities held in Nagano Prefecture. However, concurrent with living at the facility, there are some problems that arise from his continuous tearing of his clothes, and MORITA tears and wears his clothes in between so-called “problematic behavior” and “expression”.
